1903-1974Neoyorquino, lo encontramos por primera vez en los titulos de credito de una pelicula en 1936, como ayudante de direccion de Nate Watt en La rueda del destino (Hoppalong Cassidy Returns). Continuara en este cometido, siempre para Paramount, a las ordenes del citado Watt, David Selman, Edward Ven turini, Howard Bretherton y, sobre todo, Lesley Selan der. Salvo en una ocasion, las peliculas son entregas su cesivas de la serie protagonizada por William Boyd. Cuando, en 1941, pasa a la direccion, no es de ex tranar que su obra, westerns en su inmensa mayoria, se centre en series y seriales con actores como el citado Boyd, Charles Starrett (Durango Kid) o Johnny Mack Brown. Trabaja para Columbia y, en menor me dida, para Monogram. 1905-1987Lo encontramos como montador en Universal, Para mount y Republic a partir de 1929. En los anos 40 dirige cortometrajes, algunos de los cuales logran merecida fama. En los 50 se convierte en un avispado productor de peliculas de aventuras, fundando la Warwick Productions con Albert R. Broccoli. Rompe con su socio a raiz de la llegada de James Bond, con la que Allen no estaba muy de acuerdo. Sorpren dentemente, aunque tal vez debido al exito de la serie del famoso espia, se hace cargo de la produccion de las peliculas consagradas a otro espia de ficcion, Matt Helm, encarnado por Dean Martin. Las tres entregas son The Silencers (Phil Karlson, 1966), Matt Helm, agente muy especial (Murderer’s Row, Henry Levin, 1967), y Emboscada a Matt Helm (The Ambushers, Henry Levin, 1968). Polaco de nacimiento, aborda esporadicamente la direccion de sus proyectos, entre los que cabe citar su colaboracion con Burgess Meredith en El hombre de la Torre Eiffel (The Man On the Eiffel Tour, 1949), y New Mexico, un western oficialmente dirigido por Irving Reis. 1907-1993La tan manida palabreja “artesano” se invento, sin duda, para definir a Gordon Douglas, un magnifico profesional, capaz de lo mejor y que no conocia la palabra “peor”. Una riquisima filmografia ilustra cualquier comentario elogioso que se quiera hacer acerca de este director, que realizo un punado de westerns, algunos de los cuales son, sencillamente, so berbios. Bastara con citar tres: Solo el valiente, un intenso drama claustrofobico, la enigmatica Embos cada y la itinerante Rio Conchos, modelo de virtudes cinematograficas. Neoyorquino, fue primero ac tor infantil, despues actor joven, mas tarde creador de gags para Hal Roach y, por fin, realizador. RKO, Columbia y, sobre todo, Warner Bros consumieron lo esencial de su labor como director. Fue para la ultima para la que realizo sus mejores peliculas, y tambien sus mejores westerns. Probablemente la obra maestra de Douglas sea su filme fantastico La humanidad en peligro (Them!, 1954), producto modesto pero de una intensidad casi nunca alcanzada en el cine de ciencia-ficcion. Hay que decir, con pena, que fracaso en el innecesario remake de Stagecoach, que rodo en 1966, y que en Espana llevo el titulo Hacia los grandes horizontes.Girl Rush. 1944. 65 minutos.
